Rana Plaza Incident and Present Situation of Garments Industry of Bangladesh

Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Vice Chancellor, Presidency University and macro financial economist presided over the seminar on “Rana Plaza Incident and Present Situation of Garments Industry of Bangladesh”, organised by Presidency University at the university’s Gulshan Campus on 3rd July at Aman Conference Hall from 3pm to 6pm while Dr. Mashiur Rahman, Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister attended the program as chief guest.
Dr. Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Additional Director, Research, CPD, presented keynote paper on the topic.
Christian Von Mitzlaff, BSCI Representative to Bangladesh, Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez), MD, Evince Garments Ltd, Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam, Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Presidency University, Shibli Ahmed Khan, Head, Department of English, Annesha Zaheen, Lecturer, Department of Business, Presidency University, Kalpona Akter, Executive Director, Bangladesh Center for Workers’ Solidarity, Zia Ahad, Director, Global Human Rights and Nazma Akter, President, United Garments’ Federation were in panel of discussion as special guests.
Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali said that as industrialisation is going on and entrepreneurs as well as labourers are passing a second generation stage, some problems might appear but it can be expected that the garments sector as a whole will grow up gradually.Dr Mahboob urged the government to frame a task force for negotiating with the US government for getting back GSP facility.
