Study Tour to Haripur Grid Substation
EVENT DESCRIPTION
The final year students of the program of B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering under the Azimur Rahman School of Engineering of Presidency University took part in a day-long study tour to the Haripur 230/132 KV grid sub-station of Grid Maintenance Division, Dhaka (East) under the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) Limited on 26 June 2011 (Sunday) at 10:00 am. The purpose of the study tour was to help the students to have a practical knowledge on the operation, maintenance and controlling of different equipment of this sophisticated and modern grid sub-station in Bangladesh. Around fifty (50) students including fifteen (15) female students participated in the tour. Two (2) faculty members of the ECE Department, Mr. Muhibul Haque Bhuyan, Assistant Professor and S. M. Shamim Reza, Lecturer guided the students during the tour.
Two Junior Assistant Engineers of PGCB guided the students in two groups. They have demonstrated and briefed the operation of the 230/132 KV and 132/33KV transformers, different types of bus bars, feeder lines, lightning arresters, disconnecting switches/isolators, circuit breakers, relays, wave traps for power line communication system (PLC) etc. They also explained how the power is taken from various power stations and are being fed to the different feeder lines through PGCB. They have also demonstrated the various control operations of the grid sub-station in control room. They have also showed how a bus section is isolated for its maintenance work in practice. It may be mentioned that the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) Limited is the largest grid sub-station in Bangladesh and was created under the restructuring process of power sector in Bangladesh with the objective of bringing about commercial environment including increase in efficiency, establishment of accountability and dynamism in accomplishing its functions. It was incorporated in November 1996.
